Chapter Twelve
Gerri and Miriam must not have heard her car pull into the driveway or her key in the door. Lee found them cuddled together in the morris chair, dressed in colorful caftans. From where she stood in the dim hallway, she could smell lavender soap and figured they must have just gotten out of their baths. They held open on their laps some pages of music they were perusing together. Miriam’s head rested on Gerri’s shoulder, and their bare toes touched on the ottoman. Lee stood quietly and gazed for a moment, remembering how Devorah and she had often sat like that, like two who were artists and lovers together. She felt shy about intruding. “Hi,” she chirped, and Gerri and Miriam looked up in surprise.
“Lee, come join us,” Gerri called. “How was your day?”
“Yeah, how’s Rosalind?” Miriam asked. They sat up and gave her their attention.
Lee groped for a story about the mythical Rosalind, but suddenly it seemed pointless. Why should she keep hiding from them that she’d been back to Eggerscliffe, that she was as certain Devorah still breathed the air of this world as she was that they did? “Actually, there’s something I need to tell you both,” Lee began, taking the seat on the sofa closest to their chair. They waited, expectantly. “I spent the day—” But before she could get the sentence out, the house phone rang.
Gerri got up and ran to the kitchen wall phone. “Gerri, let the answering machine pick it up,” Miriam said. “She can never just let a phone ring,” she complained. “Hey, Gerri let it go. This is important.”
“I’ll tell them to call back,” Gerri said. And Lee heard her pick up the receiver and say, “Hello. Who? Who’s this please?”
“So, what were you going to say?” Miriam asked Lee.
“Let’s wait for Gerri,” she said, happy for the few moments’ reprieve. Would they think her crazy again?
“It’s for you, Lee,” Gerri came back to say. “She says her name is Lily. She apologized for calling so late—said she tried to call your cell but you have it turned off, and she has to tell you something she didn’t tell you at dinner.” Gerri looked puzzled.
Miriam was amused. “Lily? I thought her name was Rosalind.” She laughed. “You mean you’ve got two ladies already?”
